Hey, Heroes! 🚀
Let’s have a little heart-to-heart about the one thing that makes almost every solopreneur break out in a cold sweat: The Direct Message.
We’ve all been on the receiving end of it. You know the one. You haven't spoken to someone since high school, and suddenly they’re in your inbox with a "Hey friend! 💖 I saw you were breathing today and thought you’d love this magic weight-loss tea!"
Cringe.
Because of those "Hey Hun" messages, many of us have swung the pendulum too far the other way. We’re so afraid of being "gross" or "salesy" that we just… don't say anything. We post and pray. We wait for people to find our website, click three links deep, and magically hand us money.
Spoiler alert: That’s not a sales strategy. That’s a wish.
Authentic connection is the actual "secret sauce" for service providers and digital product sellers. In 2026, people don't buy from logos; they buy from people they trust. And trust isn't built in a vacuum, it’s built in the DMs.
The good news? You can sell without losing your soul. In fact, when done right, a DM is just a helpful conversation between two humans. Let’s break down how to do this for your specific business type using our HERO framework.
The HERO 5-Message Framework
Before we get into the templates, you need to understand the "Why" behind the "What." At HERO Academy, we teach a 5-message flow that moves people from "Who are you?" to "How do I pay you?" without the ick. It’s built on four pillars:
- Heart: Start with a genuine connection. No agendas, just humanity.
- Experience: Share a perspective or a "me too" moment that establishes you know what you’re talking about.
- Replication: Show that what you do works (for you or others).
- Outlook: Focus on the future and the transformation.

If you’re feeling totally paralyzed before you even hit "send," you might be facing one of the common roadblocks we see every day. Take our Unstuck Free Assessment to figure out exactly what’s holding you back.
Category 1: DM Templates for Service Providers
Focus: High-touch, problem-solving, and efficiency.
As a service provider (think VA, Graphic Designer, Social Media Manager, Copywriter), your goal is to save people time and solve a specific technical or creative pain point. Your DMs should feel like a relief to the person receiving them.
The "I Noticed Something" Template (Cold-ish but Warm)
"Hey [Name]! I was just scrolling through your [LinkedIn/IG] and noticed your recent post about [Topic]. I loved your take on [Specific Detail]. I also noticed the link in your bio was hitting a 404 error, just wanted to heads-up you so you don't miss any traffic! Hope you're having a great Tuesday."
Why it works: You provided value with zero strings attached. You’re a hero before you even ask for a dime.
The "Capacity" Template (For Current/Past Leads)
"Hey [Name], I’ve been thinking about that [Project Type] we discussed a few months back. I actually just had a spot open up for April, and since you were so great to chat with, I wanted to give you first dibs before I post it publicly. Are you still looking to get [Problem] off your plate?"
Category 2: DM Templates for Coaches
Focus: Curiosity, transformation, and active listening.
Coaching is intimate. You can’t just "pitch" a coaching package. You have to identify a gap between where they are and where they want to be.
The "Question" Template (Engagement-Based)
"Hey [Name], thanks for voting on my poll about [Struggle]! It’s such a common hurdle. Just curious, how long has that been a challenge for you, or is it something new that’s popped up recently?"
Why it works: It’s a low-pressure question that invites them to share their story. You aren't selling; you're researching.
The "Resource" Template (Value-First)
"Hey! I saw your comment on my post about [Topic]. I actually just recorded a quick 5-minute training on exactly how to flip the script on that. Would you want the link to check it out? No catch, just thought it might help since you mentioned feeling stuck there!"

Speaking of resources, if you want to stop being the best-kept secret in your industry, you need to be visible. Check out our free course, 21 Days from Invisible to Influential, to start building that authority.
Category 3: DM Templates for Product Sellers
Focus: Value, solution-matching, and excitement.
Whether you sell digital templates, planners, or physical goods, your DMs should feel like a recommendation from a friend who knows exactly what you need.
The "Thought of You" Template
"Hey [Name]! I saw you posting about your [Goal/Event] earlier and it reminded me so much of why I created [Product]. I’m actually running a small 'friends and family' discount this week to celebrate [Occasion], I’d love to send you a code if you think [Product] would make your life easier right now?"
The "Feedback" Template (Great for New Launches)
"Hi [Name]! I’ve noticed you’re a big fan of [Niche/Topic]. I’m putting the finishing touches on a new [Digital Product/Tool] designed to help with [Specific Pain Point]. Would you be open to taking a quick peek at the sales page and letting me know if it makes sense to you? I’d love an expert eye like yours!"
Moving from "Inbox" to "Income"
Templates are a great start, but they only work if you actually talk to people. The biggest mistake solopreneurs make is waiting for the "perfect" moment.
If you're tech-shy and the idea of managing your CRM or setting up your DM automation makes you want to hide under the covers, we’ve got you. Every month, Nicole drops new, bite-sized trainings in our AI and Tech for your Business section. It’s all the tech you need, minus the headache.
